The W.A.T.C.H Programme
The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values Programme is based on the principle of Educare. This is from the Greek, meaning: to bring out from within, that which is latent. It is accepted that humans are innately good and that all knowledge/wisdom is within. With the Educare approach the teacher/facilitator assists the student to become aware of his/her own goodness and live through it. The teacher does this by: loving the student, living and role modelling the values.
W.A.T.C.H. is an Educare Programme suited to all. It is simple, practical and easily followed. The acronym W.A.T.C.H. - Watch your Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character & Heart - becomes the skeleton on which behaviours are developed for all life situations. Students gradually learn through practice to literally WATCH their Words, Actions, Thoughts in daily life.
They begin to become aware how:
- Good Thoughts lead to Good Words lead to Good Action or
- Bad Thoughts lead to Bad Words lead to Bad Action.
From this they understand that Good or Bad Consequences will follow, which over time add up to CHARACTER. Further the realization comes that if we act only out of the head, we will lack the basis of all good human interactions - Love. So dawns the awareness that HEART is integral to our lives in every relationship and undertaking.
The Big ‘T’
TRUST - known as the "BIG T" - is also included for the students to begin to learn the value of Trust in All Relationships - at UTurn, school, home and with themselves.
Presenting W.A.T.C.H
There are five techniques used to present W.A.T.C.H. These are:
- Story Telling to develop right conduct through outstanding examples of human behaviour.
- Silent Sitting to bring Peace of mind through relaxation and inner reflection.
- Quotations from good human beings to inspire and strengthen the truth.
- Group Singing to promote joy, fun, unity and sharing Love.
- Group Activities to stress our unity in diversity and human values, especially non - violence.
A wide range of arts, crafts, traditional skills & interpersonal activities are used.
Forging Charcter
We realize how important it is to Keep our WORD, fulfil the
promised ACTION. This will lead to Good
CHARACTER development and belief in Self and Others. We must also
learn Acceptance and Forgiveness of Self and Others. Each week we revisit the
elements of W-A-T-C-H moving more deeply into these aspects and gaining more
Awareness, Choices and Power in our Lives.
An integral part of the W-A-T-C-H Programme is SELF ASSESSMENT.
Each week the Student assesses his or her Self in relation to each of the elements of W-A-T-C-H as they are understood. This allows for observation i.e. WATCHing of behaviour and becoming personally aware of Good and Bad conduct and the resulting effects and consequences. This W-A-T-C-H is a personal tool for Self Monitoring, Reflection and Change.
The Goal of the W-A-T-C-H Programme is SELF CONFIDENCE. This is the cornerstone for All regardless of age. With CONFIDENCE in the SELF we can lead Meaningful, Compassionate Lives as caring members of our Families and Societies.
"True education, which moulds Character, has no limits. So, the end of education is the development of the highest Character which is without any limits. Our Character is reflected in our Words, Behaviour and Conduct in daily life. So, we should speak pleasantly and should not hurt others with our harsh Words. It is true we cannot always oblige but we can speak always obligingly. All our Actions are related to Character."Sathya Sai Baba
